Editorial: Get addicted to a healthy lifestyle.

Addiction to being healthy is not easy.

I am addicted to food. I have been addicted to food for years.  This idea is not some new revelation, but it is something that I wish would go away. After many years of being exposed to its powers, I spent hours the one morning thinking of how I was going to spend my day trying to rid myself of this scourge.  It is time for this plague to stop monopolizing my time and start delivering the lifestyle that is needed to make a difference in life.  I feel horrible, and most of my life is spent trying to compensate for the poor decisions of the past.  It is time to make a change!!!!!!

In the past, I have failed to deliver.  This trend is tremendously alarming for me as both a person and an individual.  I have always wanted to avoid overeating.  In the past, I have used fad diets and over exercise as a means to lose and keep the weight off.  The problem is that as I age, I’ve had increasing difficulty keeping the weight off.  It is time for me to make a change in my life and focus on prevention of further weight gain and not on massive weight losses as I have in the past.  

In the past, I have focused on being productive and being a good member of a military command team.  This need has led me to be more focused on my professional life and less on my personal life.  I have put off my personal accomplishments in order to meet the common good of being a productive member of a military organization.  Today, I have started to feel like I should focus more on my family and myself as I near my retirement.  Sure my retirement is years away, but maybe it is time to focus on a little bit of both.

I need to focus on being strong to continue my military career, but I need to start putting off the urge to be successful and start putting on the urge to be more healthy.  In recent months I began to feel very good about myself and my future.  I felt less focused on my career and more on my family.  I personally feel that this is a positive change toward what I need to be successful as a father and a family member.

The most important thing about retirement is staying fit and healthy.  Starting today, I am going to head to the gym and take care of myself.  Instead of exercising toward a goal of passing a physical fitness test, I am going to focus on my own health and the health of my family.  Today I am going to become addicted to something else other than a drink of alcohol or a high carb meal.  Get addicted to exercising or eating a more healthy meal can be the difference between being healthy and struggling to stay out of bed in the morning.

The Bottom line: Keep focusing on your balance of health, and you will be more successful at weight loss and weight loss maintenance.
