Sharing is caring!

The number of kids affected by obesity has tripled since 1980, and this can be traced in large part to lack of exercise and a healthy diet. – Virginia Foxx

One of my pet peeves is seeing many of the folks riding around stores on a motorized shopping cart.  Before you get mad, I am not criticizing the folks that are truly  disabled.  The are always in may what and about 50% or more of them I can not figure our why and the heck they are on them.  If you have broken limb, I can see a reason but if you are just overweight it would appear to me that the motorized cart is just making the problem worse.  If the shopper walked more before, they might not have as large a problem.

Simply being overweight or obese is not a disability any more than being lazy is a disability. Then again, I am not say that the obese are lazy, but ti might be a cause of obesity.  If there is an underlying medical condition that causes obesity, then that condition can be a disability.  The obesity itself is a not a disability, rather, it is simply a symptom of the underlying illness.  Morbid obesity is disabling so I recommend you make a change before you get there.

I find myself in a tough situation when I am asked to fill out paperwork for handicap plates.  I have had many patients ask for them for  knee arthritis or pain.  If I give them one, they will gain weight and the knee pain will be worse when they decide to walk.  The food for thoughts here is simple.  If you walked instead of riding the cart, you might not weight as much.  If you gain weight, you knee pain will be worse.  Think about it.
