Sugar may increase risk for cancer.

The study of sugar has shown that increased sugar consumption may be tied to multiple diseases. Research has shown a link to sugar-sweetened soda consumption and heart disease. Research has also shown a link between sugar consumption and metabolic syndrome, obesity, and diabetes type 2. More and more research is being down to look at the long term impact of sugar and high proccessed foods.

Recently, in June of 2019, new research is pointing to a new study from the Brittish Medical Journal that has shown a link between the consumption of sugary drinks, to include sugar-sweetened beverages and 100% fruit juices, and the risk of cancer. The study was a prospective cohort study with over 100,000 French participants aged 18 and older. The study measured the consumption of sugary drinks and artificially sweetened beverages assessed by using surveys recording both beverages and foods.

The researchers were looking for an association with cancer. They found a link to the consumption of sugary drinks and the overall risk of cancer and breast cancer. Interestingly, artificially sweetened beverages were not associated with the risk of cancer. Also, even the consumption of 100% fruit juice was significantly associated with the risk of overall cancer.

The Bottom line:  The consumption of sugary drinks, including 100% fruit juice, was positively associated with the risk of overall cancer and breast cancer. More research is needed, but this study clearly supports the recommendation to reduce your sugar intake. Although you cannot indicate causality with this study, I would suggest that you reduce your sugar intake. This study is just once more indication we should avoid sugar and it might just motivate you to cut sugar and help you lose weight.
