Oats are one of the most healthy carbohydrate sources out there.  Eating a cup of oatmeal in the morning will keep you full well into the afternoon.

Oats are a healthy staple food for both me and my family because they are not only affordable but are easily adaptable to just about any taste.  You can customize the dish with just about any kind of fruit to meet your liking.  You can add vegetables, meat, and eggs and make it less of a cereal.  The best part of oatmeal is that they are full of fiber which will slow the absorption of all of the other nutrients throughout the morning.

Stick to high fiber oatmeal and not the instant stuff.  I love steel cut oatmeal.  Because of the increased glycemic index, it will cause less of a sugar and insulin spike.  This makes a great option when we are trying to lose weight because you will be full longer and be less likely to splurge for the morning hours.  I recommend that you add them to your breakfast at least a few times a week.  I add flavorings that add nutritional value such as fruits and nuts.  Berries or apples only add 25-40 calories per serving and it really packs in the flavor.
